When Beverly and John Hemphill started Dirt Road Farm in Winder in 2019, their goal was simple but powerful: to grow sustainable, healthy food for their family and their community. What began as a personal mission to live closer to the land has blossomed into a thriving farm that has been a staple at the Barrow County Farmers Market since day one.

Beverly and John didn’t come from farming backgrounds, but their curiosity and commitment led them to take classes through the University of Georgia, where they began learning the science and art of growing food. That foundation of education and hands-on hard work has shaped Dirt Road Farm into a vibrant, productive farm rooted in care for both the soil and the people it feeds.

Over the years, the Hemphills have continued to invest in their dream. They’ve added new equipment, learned new techniques, and are even building a new greenhouse this year. Their commitment to sustainability and quality has earned them a place at multiple farmers markets and a partnership with Barrow County Schools, where their produce helps feed local students.

Depending on the season, you’ll find their tables overflowing with fresh, colorful vegetables — beets, carrots, greens, collards, broccoli, squash, zucchini, beans, purple hull peas, turnips, mustard greens, lettuce, heirloom tomatoes, and more. They also raise happy hens that provide farm-fresh eggs.

Of course, no visit to Dirt Road Farm’s booth is complete without saying “hi” to Willow, their beloved dog and the unofficial mascot of the Barrow County Farmers Market. Her friendly face — and Murel’s — is as much a part of the Dirt Road Farm experience as the beautiful produce and eggs they bring each week.

As they continue working toward becoming full-time farmers, Beverly and John remain committed to growing healthy, sustainable food for their community. Dirt Road Farm is proof that great things can grow when you nurture both the earth and the people around you.

Visit them Saturday mornings at the Barrow County Farmers Market and Thursday afternoons at the Flowery Branch Farmers Market. You can also follow them on Instagram and Facebook to see what they have growing on the farm.
