Vendor Spotlight: Bowen Family Farm

The Barrow County Farmers Market is proud to welcome Bowen Family Farm, a truly inspiring family-run operation based in Bowman, Georgia.

Their journey began in 2016 with what they describe as “one 4x4x6 fence post” and a simple goal: raise a couple of pigs for their own family. With little farming experience but plenty of determination, they built their first small hog pen, learned as they went, and even chased down a pair of escaped pigs on butcher day! A chaotic but unforgettable moment that sealed their passion for farming.

When they finally tasted that first homegrown pork, everything changed. The flavor, the satisfaction, and the connection to their food sparked something deeper, and Bowen Family Farm was born.

Today, that small backyard project has grown into a thriving 68-acre farm and a way of life the entire family shares. Their pigs now roam freely in large, wooded paddocks, where they can root and forage naturally. Chickens are raised on pasture and moved daily onto fresh grass using large chicken tractors.

Their commitment to regenerative farming practices helps rebuild soil, maintain forested areas, and create a sustainable system that benefits both the animals and the environment. It is truly a family effort rooted in hard work, hands-on learning, and a shared dedication to stewardship.

The Bowen family also built their own on-site poultry processing facility, becoming one of only a small

number of licensed poultry processors in Georgia. This allows them to responsibly and humanely process their pasture-raised chickens and provide high-quality, non-GMO poultry directly to their community. They even offer classes to teach others how to properly and humanely process meat birds, helping reconnect people with their food in a meaningful way.

At the market, you can find pasture-raised pork and fresh eggs from Bowen Family Farm in April, with pasture-raised chicken being added in May.
